MPL-50 - what does this set of letters and numbers mean? M-small, P-infantry, L-shovel, and the number 50 implies a total tool length of 50 cm. Sometimes it is called a “sapper”, but this is incorrect. There is BSL-110 - a large sapper shovel, but a small sapper shovel does not exist.

Infantry Shovel was invented by the Danish infantry captain Linnemann, received a patent for the invention in 1869, and in 1870 it was already adopted.
